Default overheating Cougar 250

I just got a cougar 250 and the temperature gauge goes all the way over to hot. The fan comes on. I back flushed the cooling system, inspected the pump impeller, set the air fuel mixture but it still runs hot. Any suggestions?

I hope the replacement temp gauge fixed your problem. Unfortunately, our experience has been that the replacement gauges have exactly the same problem as the originals. I recently spoke to them about it and it turns out that the copper sensor is causing the problem, and all 2006 Cougars will be shipped with sensors made of a different alloy. No word yet on when more replacement gauges will arrive with this new allow. In the meantime, as long as your fan is switching on and you aren't seeing obvious signs of overheating (steam flowing into the overflow bottle, for example) then the machine isn't overheating. I'd even go as far as to recommend that you just unplug the lead going into the sensor.

You are right. The new sensor is showing it is running even hotter. I have not heard about the sensor materials. I used an infrared temperature guage and when I "shoot" the radiator it shows it is running to 180 degrees and the fan cuts on and cools it to 165 which I assume is the correct operating temperature. I emailed this to Kazuma and have not heard back. I think it is fine but when I go to sell it I imagine a purchaser will be suspicious as I would be.

Thanks for the reply.

The Cougar is a big, heavy 250. It weighs about 550 pounds. It has a soft ride. I call it my old man atv. I haven't flipped it yet since I mostly ride with my 8 & 11 year old kids but when I go with the guys I am sure I wil eventually turn it over.
