Was the underside of cylinder head all beat up too? Man I do love the sound of those old inline 3 or 6cyl Mercs. We had quite a few 2 and 4cyl Johnson/Evinrudes and an old oddball Scott-McCullough boat/outboard back in the day. Talk about constant tinkering.

BTW this one was a V6. After having the bottom 2 cylinders bored 15 over I ran that engine for 6 years. Sold the boat a couple of years ago to buy a bike.

That's the beauty of 2-stroke outboards. Atleast you can tear into them and fix them fairly easily. Did you ever pop the top off a new high horsepower 4-stroke outboard? 
That's a lot of stuff packed into a small area.
