2016 taotao 125 shift shaft broken
#1

Hey guys have a 16 taotao with forward/ reverse and the long shift handle that shifts it. I have had 2 broken shift shafts now wondering if anybody else is having the same issues with them breaking off just inside the case? If so has anyone come up with a fix for the issue? It's a poor design if you have ever had the motor apart to see how it's put together all that holds the shaft Is a oil seal on the left side of the motor then they have a 2 foot shift handle hanging off the shaft.

I have the same problem with my ATA 125D. The shifter shaft broke off about an inch inside the case. Did you ever find a solution? I can't even find the parts listed on TaoTao's parts website. Any help would be appricated!

These engines were designed for foot change, that is why they usually are shove forward for reverse and pull backwards to go forwards, counter intuitive to say the least. Putting a two foot lever on the shaft is the cheapest way to give hand change, rather than the more complex (and expensive) linkage that most pre-war motorcycles used.

If it was my machine i would make a sleeve that sits higher up the shift lever to keep people from pushing it to far and of to the sides. This is the force that is breaking the shaft..
