Default starting issue

As a follow up to my first post, my atv does have a new battery. It had been running & starting up great all day. The last time I started it, fired right up but I stalled it taking off. When I tried to start it again, just a click. I can feel the starter relay clicking. I put a screwdriver across the post on the relay & it sparks but no starter movement. The engine is not locked up cause it was running great to that point. I don't know if I should replace the starter or it's the relay.

"The engine is not locked up cause it was running great to that point." They do run great, until they lock up, then they won't start.

First check the engine isn't seized, then charge the battery, you could simply have flattened it. If it still won't spin over, it looks like a faulty starter. If you want to do the tests, I've just posted them in the Kawasaki section today, and in the Suzuki section a couple of days ago.

What's the best way to test to see if the engine has seized? I put my battery charger/booster to the battery & the solenoid still just clicks, starter does not move or make a sound. I will try the test with a lamp.

How to check for a seized engine depends on the make and model. If you haven't got a pull start, when you remove the starter you should be able to poke the gear that it engages, round with a screwdriver in both directions, one way easy, the other way will turn the crankshaft round, if it isn't seized.

The engine is not seized. I took the starter out & jumped it. At first, it just sparked but then it started turning. I put the starter back in & turns over great. Engine started with no problem. I started it several times & so far, it's working great. If it happens again, I'll know it's the starter locking up. Thanks for your help.
