I am looking for some info on some suspension mods for an LT250R. Mine is an 86, and I have had my rear shock revalved and my front are giving up on me. Has anyone here changed the front shocks on their bikes, and if so what kind did you use, what kind of riding do you do. Plus, did the new shocks increase the wheel travel any? I am thinking about hacking the front end off my quad and welding the frame rails closer together to make use of some of the shocks available for the 250R. But before I go through the trouble of that, I would like to see whats going on with the easier method :') Later

 

Well, the possibilities are endless when it comes to suspension, regardless of quad. Question is, how much are you looking to spend? I broke one of the front shocks on my Tecate about a month ago. Upon pricing stock replacements they were over $300 a piece! I checked into getting them rebuilt, still $250+ In my opinion I wasn’t getting enough for that kind of cash. I asked a friend at a local Dealer, he recommended Works shocks. They are custom built for your needs. They ask you several questions regarding the bike, your weight, and the type of riding you do. I bought a set of tri-rates, which are adaptable to cans later if I want, for $340. It did take a few weeks for them to come in, but I’m more than satisfied with them!

Regarding more travel with new shocks, I rarely doubt it. Suspension travel is sometimes determined by the frame to A-arm setup. Jack the front of the quad off the ground, remove the front shocks, see how far the A-arms sit, that’s as far as they will go regardless of shocks.

Usually the shocks are built just a tad bit shorter than the max travel of your quad. To obtain more travel, you may have to go to an aftermarket A-arm. This will create more leverage away from the frame, but even with +2’s I doubt you’ll see that much difference.
