Default 85 Yamaha Moto 4 axle removal

According to the service manual, it says that after I have the 2 axle nuts off along with tires, brakes and such, that I should be able to tap the axle out of the rearend housing. Well I've "tapped" pretty hard and it won't budge. I don't want to hurt the ends of the axles by beating on them. Is there a simple trick of the trade that I'm missing, or does thing really need to be hit HARD? The reason I need to remove it it so that I can replace the bearings, these old one are shot. Thanks in advance for any insight....Tim

Hi Tim, looks like this is a really old thread and probably dead, but I am having the exact same issue removing the axle you described. The manual says tap it out, but tapping has already begun to cause damage. We're you successful in removing the axle? How did you do it? Thanks!

This was his only post. He didn't get an answer in 5 months and never came back. You'd be better off starting a new thread in the Yamaha forum. Good luck.
