ATV tires for dummies
#1
Folks, my King Quad is the first ATV I've ever had and I've only had it since this past April, so my knowledge is very limited. My question fer ya is tire size. For instance, my tires are 25x10-12 in the rear and 24x8-11. What are all those numbers for? I know that the 25 means a 25" tire, but what are the other numbers for? I'm thinking of getting either the new Titan AT589's ot the Goodyear Mudrunners for the rear, and I've seen them in my size. I don't know what to get for the front as I can't find anything like them in my size. By the way I'm looking for tires that'll handle the mud but still ride the hardpack/trails smoothly.
any words of wisdom from you ATV vets?

the numbers in tire sizes refer to height, width, & rim size, respectively. You can alter the first two sizes within limits, but the rim size must remain the same as stock.
The Kenda Bear Claw is available in the stock size for your front as well as the rear. I have them all around on my 96 KQ. I very seldom ride it, being more sport Quad oriented, but I've found them to be quite effective in moderately muddy conditions as well as on hard pack.
The very last word in your post is somewhat contradictory inasmuch as a good mudder and a smooth riding tire on hard pack isn't possible...A compromise has to be made, but the Bear Claw seems to me to be that compromise.

Well, TickMagnet, welcome to the wonderful world of atving. Those numbers are: diameter, width, and rim diameter. For example, your rear 25x10x12, means that it's "supposedly" 25" tall, 10" wide, and mounted on a 12" rim. What I mean by supposedly, is that the heighth and width of the tire isn't neccessarily always what it says on the sidewall. As for your choice of tires-You may wanna consider looking at cheng shin's wooly copies, they have them in your size, they handle mud well, and are excellent on hardpack, also ITP has some tires that would outfit you, the 25x10x12 Blackwater, and 24x9x11 Max Trax, which are basically the same. I have first hand experience with both of these types of tires, and like them pretty good. Also, you may have better luck, looking for a 24x9x11 front vs. the 24x8x11, it would only be about an inch wider, which should be able to clear your fenders and everything. There are several others in this forum that run the mighty kink quads, so they should be able to help you out to.
