Default 25" vs. 26" Clearence

I am looking to get some new tires. I am leaning toward the 25 589s on c series wheels, but how much clearence would I gain going to the 26". I didn't really want to go so wide in the back. I have a rubicon and just want better performance on trail and in the good stuff. Thanks for your input.

what came stock on the rubicon? I highly recommend the ITP Mudlites and you can't go wrong with a larger size. if you come into problems with rubbing go with a wheel spacer.

you get 1/2 inch of clearance

I just bought a set of Duck's Unlimited Wetland Radials in the 26" size (3/4" tread depth 6 ply). They should be here tomorrow. Looks to be a much better all around tire than the 25" Dirt Hooks (1/2" tread depth 2 ply). Don't expect awesome performance in the mud, just better than stock. Local dealer has not had to plug any yet (he sells Bombardier XTs with the Carlisle version of these tires), unlike some of the more popular, lighter, and less expensive 'mud' out there. They also comment that the traction in the snow is great.

Problem with 589s (heavy) or Mud Lites in the 26" size is that you go to a 12" wide tire in the rear and a 9 or 10" in the front. While you'll get better floatation -you will be covered in mud every time you go through a puddle. They stick out past the fenders. Not worth it for me. The DU Radials are 26x8x12 and 26x10x12, won't have to deal with it. And let's face it, heavier tires (40 more lbs than the radials for a set of 589s) will affect acceleration and suspension action. The DUs are relatively light. Pretty sure the ATRs are same weight and available in the 26" size without being wider, just see owners reports that the sidewalls are puncture prone in rocky areas, like the Lites.

If I pick up another set of rims, the Titan 589s will go on them for a pure mud/snow tire.
