I am doing the break in work on my Mojave and I having some problems with the valve adjustment. When I first took off the valve cover and went to measure the valve clearence there was no valve clearence at all. The valve springs were still compresed at DTC. I adjusted the clearence so it was in speck, but when I started it up the valves were making a lot of noise. I adjusted them again and they are still rattling. If anyone has any Ideas of what I have done wrong or what I need to do I would love to hear it. I can not stand having my toy in peices in the garage.

Sounds like you adjusted the valves with the cam follower on the lobe instead of on the heel. Ya need to remove the plugs on the left side of the engine case.Turn the engine over till the "t" lines up with the mark on the case.

Then make sure that the cam lobes are down.Adjust to .008-.010

I lined up the mark but for some reason the cam follower is still on the lobe slightly. I am going to try moving the cam lobe completely off from the follower and try the adjustment again.

Thier is two TDC. You have TDC wich is the end of the exhaust stroke wich is where you are adj at now.

Then you have TDC of the compression stroke wich you want to adj the valves at this one.

When you have the machine at TDC with the T mark ligned up, insure the cam lobes are facing down. From where you are now just rotate the engine 360 degrees and you'll be on the compression stroke.

Go ahead and rotate the engine a couple times with the valve cover off and the spark plug out. You will see what I'm talking about. It's not that hard just made a mistake and after this adj you'll never do it again.

Good luck.

Thank's for the advise gaff. I will try the adjustment again after work tody. I just re-read the manual and I can't believe that I missed that part. I might have to take off early to get it running so I can ride.

you would not believe how many poeple make this same mistake. They just don't admit it.

I take off the hand pull recoil also and turn the engine by hand. You'll see the T marks isn't that easy to get dead on. But thats cool you'll get it quick.

Another check after you line up your marks is to wiggle the rocker arms by hand to make sure they are all slightly loose.

Thanks everyone for the help. I re-adjusted the valves last night with the TDC on the compression stroke and the mojave is running better than when I brought it home. Thanks again for the advise.
