It depends on the track, if its dry or somewhat muddy dirt, turf 18 inch diameter turf tamers are usually prefered. But if it becomes really muddy, its best to have a holeshot style of tire in a 20 inch diameter size. I've heard that Maxxis razers work really wellin the mud also, even better than holeshots. Also, if its a super tacky track that you run on, Hoosiers might be your best bet.

The best way to go is to have a set of turfs for most situations, but you should also have a set of mud tires (Holeshots, or Razers)in case the track ends up being a mud fest.

Personally I have turf tamers in the rear, and grooved car tires up front (Rikens, now a new style is used) for MX. I also have stock 250X or 300EX front tires and Carasile Badlands (I think thats who makes them, Holeshot style tire) for the rear in muddy situations.

Hope this helps,

Sickman

The stock Ohutsu tires on a 400EX are real good tires for MX. They are light and offer excellent traction. I think they are cheap, too.

When you groove the turf tamers, you cut some of the ***** off. You can buy grooved turf tamers and grooved front radials from Nac's racing. I think they are the only way to go for MX. I run them on both of my Quads. You don't have to groove the rear turf tamers but it helps(more traction). It is a must to groove the front radials. The front grooved radials are $70 a tire and the turf tamers are $50 a tire. If you are planning on doing some serius racing I would recomend getting a set of rear bead lock wheels. They are a expensive at around $140 a wheel, but they will save you the race.
