gator tire
#1
Hello, I have a 700 prarie 2004. I want to put gator tires on it. will the gator hold up to rocky conditions. I also need to know what would be a good size. It has 25x8x12 front and 25x10x12 on rear. How deep is the tread on the gator for this size. Where is the cheapest place to buy this tire. I was also looking at the swampwitch tire. what would be the comparison between the two. can anyone answer all my questions.
Thanks

Gators will hold up to rocky conditions but thet are no the best rock tire. They are great in the mud but not an all around trail tire IMO. Gator a not the lightest tire so you might want to stay with your stock size. I think the tread depth is like 3/4" on the 25's. I bought my Gators on Ebay.

I have run my Gators about 500 miles on mostly rocky trails in the Appalachians and the Ozarks with barely any signs of wear. But, as Sprotsman said, they are not good tires for rocks traction wise. Not a lot of rubber on the ground with that deep open tread. My 26's have deeper tread than the 25's though. Maybe there is a difference. They do love the mud though. I like my Gators but if I had to do it over again I would have gotten a tire better suited for a wider variety of terrain. I got mine on EBAY also. It was the cheapest place I found and I spent a lot of time looking a lot of places.

I agree with the others . Unless the rocks are small the deep lug will have a hard time finding traction. As for the trail part they are a great tire if you spend half the time on the trail and half in the mud. There are better 100% mud tires out there but the gators will hold there own in moderate mud. If you want a good trail hard pack tire go with a radial tire they can't be beat on a trail.

You may want to check out the Highlifter MST Outlaw (www.highlifter.com). Also, you may want to check out the Mudbug. I've had pretty good luck with them on rocky VA mountain trails.
