Default Oil Helps ASAP

Hello everyone, I decided to change my oil again on my 05 Brute Force 650, I got all the old oil out and put on the next Kawi filter and then looks at the oil they gave me. It was not the normal ATV oil, it was Motorcycle oil and it was also 2 different viscosities. So with Kawi closed and only Walmart tonight I headed there after looking at this website for an hour trying to figure out what I could use so I could ride tomorrow. I ended up buying Mobil 1 Mx4t at $7.16/qt. Is this a good oil to use? I would prefer something cheaper. I read on here about red capped mobil one but had no clue what to buy at walmart. Only red cap was mobil clean 4000 or something. What can you use?

Ok no if I use the mobil 1mx4t, how long can I go before changing oil again? I have had the ATV for 4-5months and have 1050miles and 80+hrs on it. I usually ride around 50miles per ride also and also I ride fairly fast and hard. Is there a better oil to use that this Mobil 1 mx4t and it the mx good oil? I haven't put the oil in yet and can go back to walmart in the mornin before we ride but I am not sure if the auto stores are open or not to get different oil if walmart doesn't carry the right stuff.

Let me know so I can get my oil changed. Thanks alot

Mark

You lucked out and picked one of the best oils available! It is however overpriced, because I think they are trading on their name.

You always want to pick a Motorcycle Specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA, which MX4T is! It is also a PAO synthetic, which is way better than any petroleum oil. Synthetics give better lubrication at cold starts, and have better resistance to breakdown at high temperature. Never use a "car oil" and absolutely never use an "energy conserving" car oil. http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

My personal preference is an Ester Synthetic (Maxima Extra), which has a few advantages over a PAO synthetic. http://www.maximausa.com/technical/l...beNews2002.pdf

So, sounds like this is your first oil change, right? I have to scold you for going so long (80 hours) on your break-in oil! I change my oil and filter on a new machine after the first hour of riding, to get all the matal shavings out of the engine. I change again at 10 hrs., and 20 hrs., then at 20 hrs. I switch to an ester synthetic.

Quads are hard on their oil! My usualy oil change interval is about every 20 hrs., but running a synthetic, I can certainly go much, much longer than that.

Recon, thanks for the reply. No I have already did my first oil change at 20 Hrs. So this is my 2nd oil change. Still I should of changed it a little sooner for the 2nd change. 20 hrs seems really quick to change out oil. That would be like changing oil once a month almost and at $7.16 a qt, thats pretty spendy. I use the Kawi filter but I am considering switching so something else. I will have to check around here and see what other oils people carry. I was in a bind so I needed something to use.

Oil is no place to save a buck! Synthetic oils are more expensive, because they are genuinely more expensive to manufacture. I would stick with MX4T, at least for summer riding. They don't however make a 5W30, which is what I would prefer for winter riding in the frozen north.

I read in the Kawasaki manual (Clymer) that it's ok to use API SE, SF or SG,,,,,SAE 10W-30, 40, 50, 20W-40 or 20W-50. So I got the 10W-30 in the Castrol. Do you feel this will work fine on my 400 KLF Bayou? I just want to make sure as it's goin together now fresh.

Recon, Is there better stuff or equal stuff for a better price? At $8/qt and your said something about changing it every 20 hrs, your talking $26 a month for oil changes.

I use automotive oil. It's less expensive than "motorcycle" oil and there doesn't seem to be any hard evidence that motorcycle oil is better. Check out:

With petroleum oil prices up so high, in the future I see the synthetics being more competitive in price. Not any cheaper than they are now, but better in comparison to petroleum oils which are going to no doubt have big price increases!

when in dought, use what kawi suggest to use. who knows their engines better, kawi are oil mfg. plus with using oil that kawi suggest, if you do have the extended warrenty on your quad and have engine problems they cant hold it against you that you did not use the recomended oil. that is just my two cents.
