snow tires for dummies
#1
Hello All,
Wondering if someone can help summarize (ok, dumb down) the thoughts behind selecting tires for snow.
I have a Honda 250-SX (3-wheeler) and live in the Sierra Mountains @ about 7,000 ft.
Looking to tow a round saucer sleds in the snow (this is a blast if you've never tried, especially on a 3 wheeler which can pivot on the front wheel) + whatever other snow toys I can find. We get both deep powder and hard pack. Don't know if this alone is a contradiction in what I need.
Soft rubber, hard rubber, muds, paddles, studs on the knobbys, Oh My!
(should I bother swapping out the front knobby ?) My existing tires are 22' Kenda Vipers (22x11.00-8)
For image - http://www.kgmotorcycletires.com/kenda_viper.htm
Trying to get prepared for my 1st winter w/ the 3 wheeler and having a difficult time wading thru the options or even if I should chance them at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Realtor's are supposed to be an outstanding snow tire, although I have no personal experience with them. Here's a link so you can see them:

I run ITP Holeshot ATR's on the Rancher, and they are absolutely superb snow tires. We go to the mountains and I haul the kids around all day long, in yard deep snow! But, the ATR's are to big for your machine.
I would maybe try something like ITP MudLite SP's, but you will need new rims. http://www.itptires.com/pdfs/itpmudliteweb.pdf
Are you looking for a tire that will also double as a summer conditions tire?????

The Pure Sports Realtor is by far the sickest tire you could put on your trike. They slide great and are 12" wide so they'll float real good over the soft stuff. The only reason why I'd advise you against them is that they have a tendency to dig in so well that your passengers on the sled will be pelted with ice, rocks, frozen earth, shrapnel, and whatever else those things can make contact with when you hit the gas. They only come in 8" and 10" rim sizes though, if you have 9" rims the closest thing to them would either be 21x12-9 GBC Mud Sharks, or 20x11-9 ITP Mud Lite SP's.
