Default Studded Tires???

Just wondering if any body else runs studded tires in the winter months. I have an older Yamaha Warrior that I'm think of buying a used set of rims and tires for so I can stud them for the winter and use my current tires for the summer. I was planning on running whole shot XC tires for both the witer and the summer with the only difference being the studs. I don't neccesarly need to go through much snow but what is around gets packed down and turns into ice, the other idea is I may do some river and lake riding.

As far as studs go is it worth the money to buy the actual "ice studs" or am I better off buying a whole pile of stainless steel 1/2" hex headed screws? Also do you think a guy will need more than a row or two on the front since it'll simply be for stearing??

For those that are unaware what the XC tires look like.....

To me it seems like I could really get a lot of studs into these!! Now how well they'll hold them is another question all together. Keep in mind this is an older ATV that I don't want to tie a bunch of money into, so I only plan on buying a used set of rims and tires that are in decent shape, ecspecially since I'm gonna fill them with holes, lol!

I studded my Banshee with the screws. They are just OK IF you do not ride ANY pavement and don't spin the back tires in anything but ice and snow or you will rip them out. If you run on pavement you'll end up with rounded off screws that you can't get out unless you tear them out.

I have seen people use snowmobile push-through studs, but that is a project and is not cheap.

My recommendation is to find someone that still studs car tires. The carbides they use last much longer than the CRES screws. I would run a row on each side of the center **** in the front and scatter the back.

there are Ice screws out there that work really well and are easy to replace ,
When I've studded a set of tires I'll use around 50 for each rear ,and 25 to 30 for each front ,

if you don't over stud the tires you still get some slippage .

the set up I'm talking about still slips and lets you drift, but too many studs and you'll slip on pavement really bad, leave marks all over your driveway

gold ice studs are the ones to get if you want the real thing. they can get spendy when buying alot. only use them if you are going to stay on the ice!!! make tire wraps out of rubber tubes when transporting your quad. the tires you talk about may not hold the studs in very good if they are dimpled or made of a soft rubber compound. chen shin makes a cheap tire that is easy to stud up. we use up to 1200 studs when setting up a quad for ice racing. if you go just to play then buy screws that will cut into the ice and not skate on top. hope that helped!!!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. The quad won't be ridden on ANY pavement. I live in the country and the closest thing to pavement would be going in and out of the shop, no more than 50 ft worth. They will be used on my gavel road though but I would imagine that to be much easier on them then pavement and if we get any snow the gravel turn to packed snow & ice so they'd be perfect for that.

As far as the rest of the year goes, I plan on running my standard set of tires. The reason I was looking at the tires I mentioned is because I had found at set on matching rims (gold rims like I already have) for a cheap price with about 80% tread left. I'm not opposed to other ideas but I want to buy a set of rear tires, rims, and studs/screws and keep the project fairly low budget (like $150). Thats really my only requirement. I would of course find a set of fronts eventually but for now since my current rear tires are almost new I don't really want to fill them with holes on a trial and error type of deal. The fronts on the other hand are a bit easier to come buy and considerably cheaper (and mine deffinitly aren't new)!

keep the info coming and any ideas that'll get me going on this project!
