gear shifting
#1
I know this is gonna sound dumb but I just got my ATV and im not completely sure on how to use it but when you shift into 3rd or 4th gear, when you slow down or practically stop, are you suppose to put it back in 1st and as you speed up again put it in 2nd, 3rd, etc. or can you just leave it in the high gear?

if your just starting off as a beginner, IMO, it would be better for you to ride on flat terrain to leran the whole shifting thing. i wouldnt try racing but just get the feel of the atv. to answer your question; if your in 3rd or 4th gear and you come to a stop(especialy on a slight incline uphill) you want to start off in 1st. if its a flat serface you may be able to start in 2nd. also if your in 4th and slow down to about 8-10 mph, youll be able to down shift into 2nd or 3rd and be fine.Is this atv an electic shift, manual shift without a clutch or do you shift with a clutch?(what atv are you riding)? this may depend a to answer you question a little better. as you learn more about the shifting it will become natual and in the areas you had to stop and down shift to 1st, you will be able to do in 2nd or maybe even 3rd. just remember if your giving the atv alot of gas and its hardly moving, your in too high of a gear. you need to down shift. only time on you atv will help you get better. good luck, and feel free to ask any other ?s. maybe someone else can answer them a little easier than i did.

It can be hard to get the transmission to mesh sometimes when you shift while standing still (might need to rock it back and forth). I find it is better to downshift back through the gears as I slow down to stop. Then, I am back in 1st and ready to go again when I want to take off......

well when I downshift as I am slowing down it kinda slings me? should I just wait til a complete stop til I shift it down to first? The engine is built like a Honda, the man said it is a clone of it or something, but it is a 110.

for example, this may not be exact but it gives you an idea;
1st gear= 0-4or 5mph
2nd gear=5-10 or 12mph
3rd=10-18 or 20mph
4th=20-28 plus mph
if there is a 5th gear then 28 plus. so keep that in mind that when driving and your in 4th gear and maybe you slow down for a turn to about 8 mph, you know you should be in 2nd gear to accelerate again. or maybe you slow down to about 18mph then you know you need to be in 3rd. if the bike slings you forward. you dropped gears to far or too fast. just take it slow and take your time. you''ll get eventually. try not to let the bike sling forward though. it may damage the transmission. have fun ,be careful!
