Default Opinion on ply rating for tires on 400ex

I have an 04 400ex. It's still got the Ohtsu tires on it. 20x10-9 and 22x7-10
The rears weigh 13.8 lbs and I'm happy with the way the bike rides..

BUT, the tires are soft (although they are 4ply) and puncture easily.. I have many plugs.. lol

I was looking at the Maxxis Razr tires. 4 ply is 15.4lbs and 6 ply is 16.6 lbs.. Obviously if I add weight to the rear tire it will slow me down a bit and add some stress..

So my question is what is the advantage or disadvantage to 6 ply tires.. Or 6 ply vs 4 ply with the Maxxis Razr..

has anyone dealt with this before

I do mostly trail riding but enjoy hitting corners hard, pulling tires off ground, hitting average sized jumps, and going fast in fields..

Just curious how noticable the heavier 6 ply is and if the 4 ply is plenty strong enough. (stronger than the Ohtsu)....

Any Advise?

I don't have any emperical data, but I would hazard a guess the 4ply Maxxis is going to still be tougher than the Ohtsus. If you want durability though, go for the 6ply. They are only a few $$ more and will definately outperform the stockers. Ride it and if you need a bit more power you could always drop a tooth or two on the rear sprocket, or maybe spring for that higher comp. piston. Unless you are drag racing or something I doubt you will notice much loss of acceleration. The Razrs will handle better and may even raise your cornering speeds some.

I ride desert, and that means lots of sharp rocks and thorns. I have experimented with different tires over the last decade, but I still keep coming back to the ITP Holeshot XC (4 ply front/6 ply rear). I have never had a puncture or flat out on the trail, and that is in thousands of miles of riding on 10 different quads!!!

The Maxxis tread pattern is just a Holeshot knockoff you know. Holeshots were around many years before the Maxxis.

I do have to say that I run fix-a-flat in my tires all the time. If I get a thorn *****, it just fixes itself...no big deal.

Also, have been running ITP TrakStar radials on my kids quads (they really improve the ride!). After a couple years of teenager style abuse...no problems with them either. 6-ply front and rear.

If I were an eastern trail rider, I might pick the Holeshot H-D's. 6-ply front and rear.

I ordered the Maxxis Razr, I appreciate all the inpput.. I took a serious look at the ITP but they were a tad heavier and bit more money as far as I could find..

I got the Razr 20x11-9 and Razr 22x7-10 both in 6 ply..

I'll let you know how me and my 400 like em..

thanks again
