will smaller in front will increase you acceration and bigger in the back gives you more top speed but if you ask me i dont feel the top speed go up but when you change the front to smaller you can realy take off fast hopes this helps

You sound a little confused! Going smaller in front and/or bigger in back will lower your effective gearing, and give you more low end power and quicker acceleration, but at the expense of top end speed.
Going larger in front and/or smaller in back wll raise your gearing, giving you more top speed but at the expense of low end grunt.
1 tooth change in front = 3 tooth change in back
As for the original question, it would help to know what machine we are talking about.
I avoid 12 tooth fronts, because they are so small they almost kink the chain and are therefore bad in terms of chain wear.

i thought smaller in front gives you more acceration but you loose top speed and bigger in back will give you more top speed but you loose acceration is that right? and if you put bigger in front will that allso bring your top speed up....................so on my 84atc200x with 18inch tires witch i think small tires bring you top speed down. but my gearing is 14/40 thats 2 teeth bigger in front does that gearing help my top speed out or should i change it the stock gearing 12/40 but i have 14/40

Reconranger is correct. A smaller front sprocket, larger rear sprocket, and/or smaller rear tires will increase acceleration and decrease top speed. A larger front sprocket, smaller rear sprocket, and/or larger rear tires will decrease acceleration and increase top speed (assuming the engine has the power to do so). The easiest way to demonstrate this would be on a multi-speed bicycle.
