I'm having a terrible time busting loose the ball joints on my Honda. I know Honda makes a ball joint puller, but is there a relative easy way to do it without buying this (likely) costly tool? I figured the tuning fork type would tear it up, right?

You mean remove them from the spindles? You can have them pressed out.
Or you can put the nut on a few threads upside down (so the BJ stud is not showing) and hammer on the nut. You may have to buy new nuts.
Maybe try a C-clamp?

Good luck!
