ever rebuild shocks yourself?
#1
I was wondering if anyone has ever rebuilt / service their own shocks. Any information would be appreciated.
Allot of ATV racers do ALL their own wrenching, I figure why not service our own shocks too. I have seen Wayne from PEP do it at the national tracks, it doesnt look real hard just to service them.

We do all of our own shocks. Makes it a lot easier when you don't have to send them out somewhere, especially going to CA. Seems like anytime I send something into that black hole of a state it almost takes an act of God to get it back. I can do a complete set of shocks in a couple of hours. Main reason behind us swithching to doing them ourself is that it allows us to play with different setups before the nationals start. It does take a few special tools but they are readily available from several sources.

The main tool needed is a nitrogen charge guage. It is also handy to have a spring removal tool. You can usually make your own. You also need bushing and seal drivers of the proper size. You could jury rig some of this stuff but you can also screw up a good shock by trying to use improper tools. Most of this stuff in universal in that it can be used on different shocks but some of it is special to the type of shock you are working on. Check with Tucker Rocky, White Brothers or Motion Pro to get most of these items. You can expect to invest from $300 to $500 for everyhing you will need.
