TNTQJ, yes those dunes on the other side of the road from the resort are oipen for riding. They aren't as good as the main dunes but if you are in the exploring mood it's worth a little side trip. If you go straight out from Chokecherry the trail straight nort takes you to some more dunes plus all the "fingers" going north from the big dunes are interesting. People always focus on Chokecherry, Devil's dune or Thunder mountain when there are other interesting dunes to see. I wish i lived near there.

Well i need some help now on where to stay. It will just be for 2 or 3 nights just sleeping in an enclosed box trailer. Somebody said desert oasis has showers and bathrooms? Do they have a phone number or website? We will be there july 24-27th or so. Thanks for any help. Oh, and battouttahell, hope to see you there, Just look for a baja with shaved fenders and a yellow DS together and thats us. I cant wait, hopefully the weather wont be too hot because we wont be taking our weekend warrior. We will be driving up to island park for 1 day to check out cabins so we will probably only have 2 days of riding. Sean

Desert oasis does not have the bathrooms done yet, there are porta potties, but when I was there over the 4th they were still working on the showers.

If it were me, I would either rough it at the blm area, it is free, or get a motel room in town and then just use the day use area to park and unload.

I will be at the desert oasis, in a full hookup spot with the air on all day long, that is my favorite part of full hookups. I will most likely be on the black and white banshee, with checkered flag. I am a big guy, and I usually have my son with me on a kfx80. Oh, alot of times I were the fat man racing team shirt, the ones gary from tvi was giving out.

We are going to be taking some day trips to explore the area and see some sights, so if we are not around that is probably where we are at.

Might see you there.

We are now thinking about pulling the weekend warrior out there if its gonna be hot but 1900 miles for 3 nights of hookups and only 10mpg sucks, if it was for a week i wouldnt question it but pull 12,000lbs 2000 miles is no fun, lol. Sean

I can understand your dilema, you might not be able to get into full hookups this late anyway.

Here is the website for the desert oasis.

Here is the site for the resort. I have a full hookup at the oasis, and am on the waiting list for the resort.

I will let you know if I end up with an extra spot.

I am leaving on Tuesday morning.

Later

I'll be at Egin Lakes all weekend of the 24th. They don't have water, but plan on having it online by next spring. You can get water at St. Anthony, and I'm sure Monty at the Desert Oasis will let you get water for a few bucks. Just tell him you are camping at the BLM site and want to fill your buckets. He told me last week that when his showers are done he is going to let those at the BLM site use his showers for a small fee (2-4 bucks?)

The campground at Egin is expanding to accomodate all those Utahns coming in fro the 24th. They will still expect groups to use all of the 20x100' site before using another - so plan on bunching up, but they have 24 more slots ready if the first 24 fill up. Oh yes, it looks like a new camp host is on site, which helps if you need info and the rangers or sheriffs have left to patrol the dunes.

BTW, the new county ordinance that requires flags on atvs is written to also include motorcycles and discussions are in progress to see if they will enforce flags on the bikes. The ordinance also specifies flags must be orange or red and 6x12". BLM website info says the same thing and doesn't seem to be enforced in the past (flag yes - color didn't seem to matter) but I'm getting the impression that local law enforcement will now get you for not having flags that are the right color.

personally, I can see the orange ones on a machine as it climbs the south side of thunder while I'm unloading at Egin, but other flags don't stand out well - the checkered ones are the worst to see on the dunes. Often I don't see the checkered at all when they are only 50 yards from me, and a couple of times I've crested a dune and didn't see the flag at all either. I would rather see everybody flying at least the brite orange flags and then fly their other colors under that flag. I'd hate to slam into someone. Seems to happen every weekend in the big dunes. Those EMS folks and Rangers keep busy it seems! With all the folks coming in for the Utah holiday - BE SAFE- and come see me at Egin if you are bored of riding LOL

hey rugger, we will probably just camp there at egin, we will get there either thursday night or friday morning so hopefully it wont be too crowded. What does your rig and what type of quads do u have. We have a yellow DS and a baja DS and a red superduty ford truck and will have an all black enclosed snowmobile trailer behind it so stop by if u see us. We have never ridden there either. Sean

Good News!

My friend Monty who owns the Desert Oasis has told me that those of you who want to shower, can do so. Even if you are camping at Egin Lakes. Just go to his store by the road, and make arrangments with his wife Aurlee. They are usually open dialy noon to 6. Its a pay shower - so bring some change. Since Egin does not have water yet, he can also hook you up. And yes - the showers are now open!

BTW, Fremont County has been enforcing their new flag ordinance on rails and atvs. If you ask them if you need one on your bike - they tell you YES but I haven't seen them ticketing anyone on bikes... yet. Be warned. They are also puuting together a helmet ordinance to be passed before next season. Guess they are tired of scraping bodies off the sand. Yup - another fatality occured on the 24th weekend in July. Maybe the new ordinance will only affect minors - maybe not. Its not to cool to ride the dunes afterwards - kinda spooks you.

The campground at Egin has hosts now. They seem ok - older folks. campers tell me that they don't put up with crap and call the sherrif regularly with arrests occuring sporadically. Guess if you want to party - better go somewhere else. Also BLM has a fire ban in place and the only place to have a fire 'legally' is at Egin Lakes in thier fire pans. I've been told that Sand Hell Resort isn't allowing them and I know that the Oasis isn't. All other camping locations are prohibited. You can use gas grills though. There were some major wildfires nearby last weekend so the fire patrols are going to be onry.

Hey see all of you on labor day!
