Go to Yahoo maps and type in:
Pier Ave or Grand Ave
Grover beach, Ca
Both Ave's lead to the beach. Either one will give you access to get on the beach. Pier Ave is a just little closer to the actual dunes. Zoom in or out to get an overalll feel for the area. Pismo (Oceano Dunes now) is north of Santa Barbara and just about 12-15 miles south of San Luis O'bispo.

You can go to the "Friends of Oceano Dunes" website... that may give you a little more info. We ride Pismo all the time. It really doesn't compare to Glamis in regards to size of riding area or size of dunes, but it's still a great place to ride. It's fun to ride the dunes and then watch the sunset over the ocean from the top of a dune...just make sure if you do go, don't ride before Pole 2.. they'll ticket you for that! Here's their website... Friends of Oceano Dunes

Dumont-Take the I-15 north to Baker. Then north on 127. In about 25 miles, you will see the dunes off to the right. You have to drive in several miles on a dirt road, but can't remembr how the dirt road is marked. Just look for all the traffic and trailers!

Pismo is disapointing since they closed most of it 24 or so years ago. Dumont is worth the trip, but they do have more and more "wilderness areas" out there.

If you use Mapquest you can enter the SVRA for the city "Oceano Dunes S.V.R.A." (Make sure to include the periods in S.V.R.A.). However, it will give you bad directions. But that will show you where it is. Bascially take 101 North from SoCal and exit Grand Avenue in Arroyo Grande. Go west (back over 101). When you get to Pacific Blvd. (the train tracks) you have 2 options. One, go straight and enter through the Grand Ave. entrance, or make a left on Pacific Blvd, head south for about a mile and make a right on Pier Ave. (only direction you can turn). Go west on Pier, the entrance is at the end of the street.
If you haven't driven on sand before, you're in for an experience. It's best to air down your tires (ranges from 10psi to 30psi....different people choose different pressures depending on many variables.) The goal is to increase the contact patch of tire 2x-4x. That way you float on top of the sand instead of just sinking. I take my GMC Sonoma 2WD (i.e. S10) down to 12psi front, 10 psi rear and the last time out I managed to not get stuck for once. Your tire type, tread pattern and tire condition will make a huge impact. Previously I was on 5 year old tires that wouldn't bulge because they had gotten hard. The new fresh tires (just a standard passenger tire (BFGoodrich Premier 215/65R15) worked wonderful. Do remember to bring a tow strap and shovel, just in case. I've had to dig the truck out when it's axle deep...not fun. Keep your speed up when it gets soft. I've had the steering wheel jerked out of my hands once.
Time your arrival and departure for lower tides. Pismo Beach Tide Table A receding tide is better as the sand will be wet and packed.
