What sort of modifications to the hub do you have to make, some sort of grinding or something?
And if so is it difficult or does it compromise strength?

You can not fit an 8" rim on the DS without modifying the hub!

the 22's get a better start, and won't dig in as easy, and since the ds is about 500 pounds you will like this. with your size the gear change is a good idea. and the clutch springs would be another good change there like 25 buck.

I only run 20" extreme haulers. I was still getting the front wheels up. Maybe 22's are better though.

the 20 will pull the front up no problem, it's when you stop on a ilcline and try to go again the 22 will get you going again the 20 will digg in and you'll be stuck this gets old quick with a 500 pound machine.

01ds650, try the 22's you will notice a big difference in traction. I did. But you might think about changing the gearing if you go with 22's.

I think I get along with the 20's OK because I ride at Silver Lake. Which is pretty tame compared to the big dunes out west.

23's in the rear? I didn't know they made such a thing.
Are they the ones in your pics?

Mongo, if you have not done alot of mods and with your weight, I would run a six paddle. You would be suprised how well a stock ds performs with them. You will not get a great starting hookup, but the extra slip will let it pull a taller gear longer, meaning less shifting. If you like skat traks, I have two full seasons on my extremes, over 60 longs days I would guess, and they are still in perfect condition. And were I ride, you go through a few lava beds every now and then. Good luck with your choice. Jed
