What is going on at Pismo???

What is up with all the fences and no parking past pole #6? Is this all for that damn bird they are trying to protect? They've got more fences put up than a damn cattle yard.
Just last year we parked past pole #7 and had no problems getting on. THis year we show up on Thursday afternoon and can barely find a spot along the beach to park!
I have been going to Pismo since I was about 5 (now 30)I don't think I will be going back anytime soon. It sure has gone to the crapper!

I was thinking of making my first trip up there in a week or so during the week. Is it worth it? I hear the dunes are not that big and I don't want to drive all the way up there if it's super busy and there is no place to park or ride...

i was at pismo the other day, i don't know what the hell is goin on with that damn fence. if u ride from comp hill, towards the beach, there's a new fence up that blocks off even more of the dunes. u can see pristene dunes on the other side, but u used to be able to ride farther past that crap. what's going on??? i live in grover beach (the entrance farthest north is less than a mile from my house) and i heard nothing about that

Those fences are put up every year for breeding season. I think they come down in October and go up in June. If you go past sand hwy there are some good size dunes that are normally closed off during the non-breeding season. It is still worth the trip even with the fences up.

its definately worth the trip, and i know what ur sayin about those fences for breeding season. but there's a new fence up that's farther inland than the original one. i don't think they had this fence last year.

They are definetly closing more dunes this breeding season then last year. I was out there in june and i got so mad when we go driving down the beach to see that is is closed off at six. I just dont see the point in crowding people in for some bird, i wish i new why they decided to close more down this year, and yes the dunes at pismo are on the smaller side but i still recommend going out there. It is really fun and i like pismo for jumping, there are a lot of places to get air that have good landings.

Pismo is not worth the trip in my opinion. Its tiny and crowded. Head up to the oregon dunes, its worth the extra drive, we were up there for a week earlier this month, rode over 400 miles in 7 days and never covered the same area really. Went to pismo 3 years ago when it was bigger and even then it was small, i never plan on going back.

But for most people a trip to OR is way too much. Ok, if you wanna make a week run. But not for a weekend getaway. 1/2 the people are from the Central Valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, Stockton, etc.) We escape the heat. This weekend, the Valley will be 100. Pismo, a nice 68-69 degrees.
The fence goes up March 1, comes down October 1. Nothing is allowed past Pole 6. Not even on foot. The winter months, the beach is open to all traffic to Pole 8. Past Pole 8 is only available to non-motorized traffic.
I haven't noticed any fences in way further than last year. New stuff for this year seems to be they came in another 100 yards from Pole 6 to 8. Plus the 100 yards, or is it feet, for the night closure. If you wanna nice long fast flat run, run through that area. Small whoops. Fun to take it flat out. Cause nobody goes through there during even the day, when it's open. Does have a couple of elevation changes. Run about through the middle and it's a nice line.
There really shouldn't be any more increasing of the exclosure areas. The lawsuits are all done now. Unless the Sierra Club finds somthing else to sue over. Which I'm sure they are working on.
