Oregon Dunes camping question
#1
Ive been looking and looking on the net with no such luck for info on just camping on the sand at the oregon dunes.
I have never been there, and am not really sure what the camping accomodations are like. I would like to camp on the sand, as im used to everywhere else, but i can only find info on campgrounds. If you guys think I would have a better experience camping at a campground then let me know what you think. Are there campgrounds with DIRECT access to the dunes where i can come and go as i please?
Also I want to try to stay farthest south as i can so i dont have to drive so far!(coming from northern Nevada)
Any info you guys have would be great!
thanks!!

I can think of 2 sites of camping on the sand. There is a KOA south of winchester bay and you can ride you quad out on to the sand. Also honeyman state park has a loop that you can camp @ and ride out on to the sand. hope these leads help

twiztidrider,
The USDA puts out a brochure called "Off Highway Vehicle Guide." In the section entitled "Where can I camp" and "Sand Camping" it says "Sand camping is allowed at Sand Lake Recreation Area and Oregon Dunes NRA." "New at Oregon Dunes NRA, sand campers are required to camp in designated sites, and register via permit-available at all entry fee sites. For more information, contact the Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor's Center at (541)271-3611." "Camp only in designated sites with a Sand Camp Permit, and possess a valid recreation pass or fee." Under things to remember are "Alcohol is prohibited."
I have not camped, but during my riding at Florence, there are numerous sites, all self contained camping no hookups, throughout the area, most all would require 4X4 for access as they are off some pretty rough sand roads.
Might try http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/recreation/ if you haven't already.

MFJ has got the good link. Here's another one that you might find useful.
http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/siuslaw/recr...dcamping.shtml
They keep changing the rules on sand camping. Of course, for the worse.
Good luck.
