new to duning...

Do all your maintenance before you get to the dunes. If you drop a screw or get sand in your motor you are screwed. If you do wrench on your machine do it over a blanket or trailer so if you drop something you can find it. If you have a foam type filter the sand will stick to the oil and clog it fast. Put some filter-skins or pantyhose over the filter so you can just peal it off and shake the sand out without taking the filter off in the sand. Don’t use the waxy of sticky chain lube it will cause the sand to gupe up on the chain. Use a dry lube and do it before you get there so it has time to dry. If you have to check your plugs be careful not to get sand in the motor. Bring a can of carb cleaner to clean any parts. You have to have paddles and don’t forget the whip. Most dunes you can’t ride without one. Hope this helps.

sand does get into everything. you should go through everything on a regular basis, cleaning & repacking bearings at least once/year. if you do go more often, you'll need to do it more often.
as for jetting, usually you should run it a little more rich, since you'll have it WFO a lot of the time; but you should still do plug checks ona regular basis.
i put a K&N filter on my quad, and with it, i recommend the prefilter.
The breather tubes that come off the carb get packed with sand if they are short & open to the air(posiibly letting sand get into your carb bowl), the solution to this is one of those breather box things, they run about ~$15-20.
Put a fuel filter on.
clean it off real well after each ride in the dunes & inspect for any bearings that may be failing prematurely.
