Need maintenance tips from dune riders
#1
What is the best way to keep sand from damaging the chain, sprockets, brakes, and other moving parts on my quad? I am about to buy a raptor and want to take the proper precautions before riding in sand as to not damage anything. Any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I agree with dune250r. Shockwears are worth the money. Sand pitted my rear piston shaft now I'm looking at a new shock or rechroming the old shaft. Other than that, replace the stock airfilter and rejet. Chainwax is a must. Clean well after everyride and remember to grease everything often.

Sand isn't too bad for your quad. The things to be careful are making sure you have an outerwear for your airfilter. Personally, for the sand I use a K&N with outerwear; for dirt and dust I use foam uni filter.
Make sure that you use a chain wax type of lubricant for your chain. I've hear people say to run your chain dry in the sand; don't do that.
If you have Douglas or ITP type of aluminum rims be prepared to polish them a LOT since the sand slowly turns them a greyish color from all the sandblasting. Stock rims have a coating so they are OK.
You may want to drop 1 tooth on the front sprocket too to help overcome the drag the sand gives you; I highly recommend that.
Get some hauler paddles or scat-trak paddles if you plan on going up any hills.
Have fun and watch out for all of thise hidded dangers in the dunes; again trust me on this one.
