Hey can any of you guys/gals tell me if the camp ground at Egan lakes is still open? The last time I was up there,(Aug) the Ranger said that they were going to start working on the campground, and that we would have to camp somewhere else. I wanted to make one last run up there, (weather permiting).

TNT, it wasn't me... But I do know they are planning on expanding there.

The Idaho Falls Field office can be contacted at:
Office Hours: 7:45 am - 4:30 pm
Information: (208) 524-7500

Here is the proposed plan for expansion (This is dated mid-2001, BTW):

Conformance: This project is specifically provided for in the Land Use Plan.
Narrative Project Description: The project is to expand existing day use facilities and to develop overnight facilities at the Egin Lakes Access Site. The project is a Title 8 Deferred Maintenance Project which was funded to eliminate health and safety problems at the recreation site. The site is on 20 acres outside the Sand Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA). The site's existing facilities is a 2 acre gravel parking lot and a sand dispersed camping area. There is a perimiter fence around the parking area and two vault toilets. There is also a security light pole in the parking lot. The site was built to provide OHV, pedestrian and equestrian access to the St Anthony Sand Dunes. Project improvements at the site are to add and expand vehicle and equestrian parking areas, unloading ramps, information signs, buck & pole fencing and vault toilets. Site pad locations will be developed for a campground host, BLM/law enforcement contact station, vender, and first aid station. A potable water system will be added as well as electricity to the different site pads. An overnight facility for group camping as well as family camping will also be developed. Pedestrian paths will be constructed between the day and overnight use areas and one leading to the WSA. The access road into the site will be widened and paved as well as a bridge will be constructed over an irrigation ditch.

I had such a good time in Aug, I may have to go twice next year.have you been there over memorial?? I have two that want to meet up that wk. end, but the weather over there is so unpredictable ,that early Im thinkin BAD WEATHER>..

TNT, Well, I'm trying to know it all. If I lived about 530 miles closer to St. A I would be all set.

I copied that fromthe BLM site- we'll see how it turns out.

I would LOVE to get away from the resort - too far from the big dunes, too much money to camp in a tent (same as an RV), and well... You know about the owners.

I have been there before Memorial day (early May) this year and August (when we couldn't quite catch each other) and it was OK both times. It gets a little chilly in May but not too bad; Labor day is the weekend to go - lot's of people but you can still go out to the big dunes and get away from the crowds.

I am planning to go to Little Sahara, Utah the weekend of Oct 26th anf after that nothing until Glamis in January for Four Stroke Wars. Have you been to L.S. Utah? It's a great place.

Wyo~~ No, aside of St. Anthonys and our local dunes in Weiser, those are the only two places I have rode on a quad on..I used to live In Hebo Ore. So i do know about some of the sand over there. I used to go rent a rail and play on our vacation time over to Florence, but never rode on a quad there. We are wanting to take one major duning trip once a year and one trip to St. Anthonys a year. Our major trip next year will be to Dunefest, where Ill be meeting up with few others that hang out at the EXRIDERS forum.Twisted Threads is wanting to get together over memorial wk. end and go to St. Anthonys, but Im not sure if the BOss of mine will give it to me off. I hear that Memroail is a very busy wk. end there. So, which has the best sand that you have ridden on?? I hear that St. anthonys does from a few then I hear a few say Utah, who has the tallest dunes also?? I hope you didnt think I was being a smart A$$ about knowing it all, but you do have quite a bit of knowledge about the place..lol... Tina

So far, St. A is my favorite. I have only been to L.S., Utah once so I need the refresher course later this month.

Pros and cons, L.S. has better bowls, the mountain, a big area, and a variety of dunes but not the big steep, soft monsters that St. A does.

St. A has Chokecherry and Devil's Dune which seperates the men from the boys (girls from women too) plus a wide variety of dunes. There are just so many big, tall & steep dunes at St. A it's hard to describe but it doesn't have the full round bowls of L.S.

BTW, no offense taken at the knows it all comment.... (I wish I did know it all)
