Are you asking how to get there (road directions?), or are you asking what part of the dunes are best? If it's the latter, the place isn't that big. So you can just go out there and ride the whole thing!! If you are going to be here for a while, there is tons of great desert cross-country riding too. For example, Rasor which isn't that far from Dumont. Can give you directions of you would like.

If you could give me any road directions, that would be great. I have tried to get info off the Internet on riding places, but all I can find is BLM and environmentalists bashing our sport. Thanx

The riding area is south of the Amargosa River and east of State Highway 127, about 31 miles north of Baker, California. There are two ways of getting to the dunes. The Little Dunes staging and camping area is directly off Highway 127, conveniently located for immediate staging. One mile north of here, just off Highway 127, is Dumont Road, a dirt road which follows and crosses the river, leading to the main field of large dunes.

The Dumont Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Area, also referred to as an Open Area, is an exciting and remote area for off-highway vehicle recreation. Bordered by steep volcanic hills and the slow running Amargosa River, the region is easily recognized from a distance by its distinctive sand dunes. The elevation here varies from 700 feet, at the river, to 1200 feet at the top of Competition Hill, the tallest of the dunes. The historic Tonapah and Tidewater Railroad, to the east, was in operation between 1905 and 1940. The vegetation here consists of creosote scrub, some annual grasses, and wildflowers in the spring. The low elevation in the area makes for warm to extremely hot conditions in spring and summer. Early spring wildflower displays in this vicinity can be quite impressive.

We just got from our first trip to Dumont. Dumont is approximately 31 miles from Baker, CA. Like previously mentioned, there are 2 sets of Dunes. You will pass the little dunes first and then the big dunes. There is a dirt access road from the highway that takes you to the dunes.
Make sure you fill up with everything you need prior to getting there. They have a few "outhouses" but that's about it. The closest store is back the 31 miles to Baker. We were out there on New Years week so they did have a few t-shirt, flag and sunglass vendors selling from their motorhomes. Make sure you take plenty of water. The wind can get pretty wild out there at times (you'll feel it moving your trailer!) but once it dies down it makes for some great riding. Beware... all the dunes at Dumont are razors! There is also an area you may want to explore that takes you along the river (make sure you bring your dirt tires for this). One of my friends spent all day riding the trails and he said it was awesome. We left our dirt tires at home so we didn't make the ride. Comp Hill is a pretty cool site, I didn't go to the top but I did see pics taken from the top and it looks pretty tall (yes, the people looked like ants!). All in all we had a great time. Just remember to bring everything you need or you'll be heading back to Baker (and they charge an outrageous amount to use their ATM machine.. haha). Have a fun trip!
