If there is anything that I would choose besides the Raptor it would be the 09 Susuki Z400. Nice setup very simmaler to the Raptor just less HP!

The 400ex is a great trail quad and a bile if taken care of that will run forever. Both the 400EX and Z400 up to 09 are very simmaler bikes but the Z uses a dual overhead cam setup and the EX uses a overhead valve setup so the Z like to rev where the EX likes to push meaning the Z is designed for more open country where the EX will lug on the trails! Now in 09 the new Z with EFI will do both as they the canged the porting on the head to be a bettter flowing thus allowing for more bottom end torque. With the better engine and a whole new chassis it is the bike to be had in the 400 class machines!

If you looking to buy new 400 class quad the 09 Z400 is hands down the way to go. If you are looking at used 400 iter the EX or the Z will work depening on what you are looking for in a quad!

Believe it or not the Z properly modded will give any 450 a run for its money and with a good rider even beat most 450's. Doug Gust was using the old 400 to compete against the YFZ450 and Honda 450R till the LTR came out and was still very competeive aboard it! The best part of the 450 as I said is it is cheeper than any 450 and much easier to ride. More of a every day quad do to the larger torque band it has! and its a little narrower to fit between trees on the trail.
