Default Rocky Mountain High pursuing the Elusive Ptarmigan

A hunting buddy and I loaded up our dogs on our ATVs and headed up to the high country in the Front Range out of Denver this past Sept. The road into the hunting area is an old railroad grade that ran between Denver and Winter Park. The old road starts at 8000' and ends at 11,300'. Our ATVs had no problem with the altitude as they are jetted for our Colorado elevations. The fall colors were spectacular this fall, and even though we didn't find the birds, the journey was worth it.

Welcome Highcountry I am in the Springs and those are some good pics but I do have to ask what were you hunting at that ALT that you needed a shotgun?

Hi Hemi! We were hunting ptarmigan. They live between 10K' and 12K' year round. Tough hombres! If you are interested, here's more info:

That's exactly what made me want an atv. nothing beats riding through scenic areas like those.
