Rocky Mountain High pursuing the Elusive Ptarmigan

A hunting buddy and I loaded up our dogs on our ATVs and headed up to the high country in the Front Range out of Denver this past Sept. The road into the hunting area is an old railroad grade that ran between Denver and Winter Park. The old road starts at 8000' and ends at 11,300'. Our ATVs had no problem with the altitude as they are jetted for our Colorado elevations. The fall colors were spectacular this fall, and even though we didn't find the birds, the journey was worth it.

This was the end of the road for the ATVs, then a hike of another 500' to reach our destination:

Welcome Highcountry I am in the Springs and those are some good pics but I do have to ask what were you hunting at that ALT that you needed a shotgun?
