Quads and ice fishing?

I haven't heard anything more, but I imagine they have found him by now, or will find him when the ice melts. Meanwhile, a guy waterskipping on Lake Minnetonka near Minneapolis went down. The news report was skimpy on detail, but the guy apparently was a pro who competed in waterskipping events around the northlands. He crawled out onto the ice on his own. Anyway, I trust that no ATV'ers will try waterskipping on their machines.

Ice scares me, because the thickness can vary so much over the surface of a lake or river. Even fish schooling beneath the ice can make it thin at that spot. A friend of my daughter's drowned a couple of years ago when his snowmobile broke through. People were riding all around him with no problems. His motor died and as he worked to get it restarted, the ice gave way beneath him. They found his body the next day. I don't know if they ever got his sled out. It would seem to me that a snowmobile spreads it weight over the skiis and track, which would make it less likely to break through the ice than an ATV which concentrates it's weight on the tires' points of contact.

In our riding group when we hit a fozed body of water, we send out the person we least like out as probe and watch how it goes from shore while having a beer.
If he does a shore to shore figure eight pattern and returns then we venture forth.

So how often do your "friends" send you out?
