Honda 420 FE

Just bought a Honda rancher 420fe...Does the front drive shaft always turn even when the 4 wheel is not engaged?

Yes the main output shaft does turn even in 2x4 mode , but the front wheels are only engauged when you're in 4x4 mode !............
