I was looking on ebay for helmets for my family and I see DOT 181 and DOT 189. What is the difference? THanks!

Yeah as BOT just pointed out look for Snell approved helmets. And make sure the Ebay seller is a reputable store. Don't buy a helmet that Joe Rider swears he "only wore once" .......

Unless it is a high end brand name DOT only helmet (and there are few) don't even look at it. DOT approved lids are not independently tested. It is very easy to get that DOT sticker. Technically I could get one for something I make in my garage......

Snell and ECE are independently tested so you know you are getting a helmet that not only meets DOT standards but usually exceeds them.

To be honest I've found just as good prices from Motosport.com or Rocky Mountain ATV on helmets as on Ebay. So I'd check those places too for late season sales.... You might even beat any Ebay price.

Thank you so much for the help. I will check those 2 sites out. It was a store on ebay and the helmets were $29.95. So, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is? LOL

Look at the closeout sections on RMATV and Dennis Kirk and other places.

Lots of times they have last years model on sale. New quality helmet, at a much lower price.

Rockymountainatv.com has a clearance section. Get good name brand stuff cheap because it is a design from 3 years ago. I'm not telling you to buy an expensive helmet but to show you the kind of savings they offer, I bought a Helmet that normally sells for $275, but because it was a two year old model I got it for $140. So you can find a decent helmet that runs $80 bucks normally and get it for under $45...most of the time.

Also, the return policies from those stores are going to be a whole lot better than someone on ebay. Not all helmets fit the same, so that large helmet in one brand may be a medium in another.

I think that legally to sell a helmet in the US, it has to be DOT approved.
