I ride bot my Raptor and my Grizz with these and never had a issue whatsoever! Ask you friend then if these are for dirt bike then why do they have a All terrain (AT) sole on them????? LOL

I don't know where you guys are riding...
But, from my experiance those boots are fine for Dirt bike riders, that are putting out a foot for balance and are exposed to all sorts of brush as they tear through the woods. These folks NEED the steel toes and shin guards.
ME? I ride four wheel ATVs. My feet are not needed for stability, I keep my legs tucked into the frame protected front and rear by BIG Wheels.
I wear an old set of Construction boots (Steel toe & Shank), along with a heavy set of jeans (not a kid's set of fashion jeans).
This keeps me plenty safe and when I have to wade into a swamp - I am protected from all of the sharp things that are hiding there.
It all depends on the type of riding that you are doing.
