Please read the following short article.
Upstate NY Man Killed, Wife Hurt In ATV Crash
NARROWSBURG, N.Y. (CBS) ―
Authorities said a 23-year-old upstate New York woman remains hospitalized after an all-terrain vehicle accident that claimed her husband's life.
State police said 26-year-old David Curreri of Narrowsburg was driving the ATV with his wife Jodi on the back when he lost control and plunged down a 50-foot embankment along railroad tracks in their Sullivan County hometown, a community on the Pennsylvania border 85 miles northwest of New York City.
David Curreri was pronounced dead on arrival at Wayne County Hospital at
601 Park St in Honesdale, Pa.
Jodi Curreri was taken by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. She's in serious but stable condition.
The cause of Saturday's accident remains under investigation.
Just wanted to put this up here as a reminder to us all to ride safely. I certainly do not know the absolute facts of this particular incident but the first thing that comes to mind is they might have been riding in an unfamiliar area and too fast to react to avoid the unforseen.
If we all take a lesson from this then this man will not have died in vain.
I urge everyone to do a nice slow creep around and get aquainted with the terrain when exploring new and unfamiliar territory.

I'm not sure a helmet would've helped survive a 50' drop- that's 5 stories!

If it wasn't a two seater, that may have been a major factor. I remember putting a 140 pound kid on the back of my Cat 500, not a small quad, and it really surprised me how the steering became ineffective when I headed uphill, not a hillclimb just a gentle rise in the ground. No warning - it handled good on flat ground, but started up that hill and the steering was just gone. If I had needed to turn quick going up that slight grade, I'd have probably crashed before I figured out what had gone wrong.
Recently picked up a Cat TRV. With someone on the back - no problem at all. Like night and day.
Riding safe means knowing your limitations and the limitations of the machine.

Actually he was very familiar with the area, born and raised. He was wearing a helmet and it was a two seater. It was a brand new ATV only 2 weeks old. Just got it as a birthday gift from his wife. It seems something went wrong with the ATV itself, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Very sorry to hear this. It should serve as a reminder to all of this that no matter how familiar we are with our machines, they can still be very unpredictable. Don't take anything for granted. Accidents can happen even when you think you are riding within the limits of you and your machine.
