Default Purpose of a winch selenoid.

Hi all, from new kid on the block.

My Warn A2000 winch ceased functioning some time ago.
I removed it from my ATV and checked it by feeding it 12 volts directly from a battery charger. Works fine.
I next checked for current arriving to the forward/reverse control, no current.
I next checked for juice from the selenoid, nothing.
So I suspect a faulty 98266WR selenoid.

My question is : what is the purpose of a selenoid when the winch seems to operate fine without it ?????

Thank you for taking the time to enlight me.

It's so you don't have those big heavy wires running to your in out switch

So then, can I bypass the selenoid and feed current directely to the winch control without damaging the winch or my A.T.V 's electric system ???

Thank you.

Absolutely NOT! If you bypass the SOLENOID and feed all that current through the small wires and switch you will melt wires, burn out switches, and possibly set your ATV on fire.

You must get another solenoid if the one you have does not work. I don't have the electrical knowledge to help you diagnose this unfortunately... but I am thinking that the switch should have power and you said it does not... I suspect the solenoid is fine and there is another problem elsewhere...
