2011 Gio Hummer II cuts out
#1
Hi,
Well this is the second time I have asked for help here. Many thanks to the folks who helped me. But still having issues with a new Gio I bought for my boys last June 2012.
Two things stand out. When the atv is sitting idling for 20 - 30 minutes and I turn it off then try and restart it. It will not turn over. It sounds like the starter either does not have enough juice from the battery or the starter is not strong enough to turn the motor over. I did get some help from Gio and they sent some new parts to me, but they have not made a difference. This is what I have done to troubleshoot.
- Stator and recitier has been replaced with new ones
- new spark plug
- gas drained and new gas and filter installed
- New battery (fully charged).
I had the battery fully charged and no lights left on the atv. The meter had the battery at over 12v. and the atv started fine. Left running for 20 - 30 minutes at idle. Turned off engine and tried to restart. It sounds like the started does either does not have enough juice from the battery or the starter is not strong enough to turn the motor over. I checked the battery and it was at 11.5v. I put the battery charger back on and it started fine again. I checked the rectifier, CDI etc.. none of them seem hot.
The other case is when we are riding the atv for again 20 - 40 minutes and it just dies! will crank over some, but then nothing. End up pushing it back to the shed to charge the battery. I again drained the gas etc...
I have done my best to checked the wiring etc... but I am no expert that is for sure.
I read that sometimes the when the engine gets hot it might cause the friction that makes the engine hard to turn over. but not sure how to make adjustments there. Also that maybe the carb might need adjustment, but not sure what to do there. Any assistance would be appreciated. If you have pictures on how to do troubleshooting that would be great too.
Thanks,
G

ok, i believe your gasoline issue where you're draining and replacing it is not necessary. it is not a fuel issue. it's not a friction issue due to lack of lube oil either. engines produce friction. if it's that much, then you'd be losing compression and need to rebuild the engine. i believe your issue is with charging/losing charge. charge the battery one more time, start the quad. at the battery terminals, measure the voltage. rev up to half throttle, again, measure the voltage. let's see if the stator (alternator) is putting out. we may have a deficiency there. not in the gasoline. does that make sense? if the stator ain't putting out and charging the battery, that'd cause a reduction in the battery(drawing power from it to run the quad), hence making a restart difficult (it'd seem the starter to drag and foul up when it's actually low voltage causing the issue). SO, let's get you to test the stator output. also, follow the stator's wiring out of it and make sure you have good connections. sure the quick connects will be connected but look at the individual wires to make sure they are making good contact with their respective mates in the quick connects.

intermittent spark loss is also a sign of loose connections UNLESS the CDI is getting overheated. we've seen that before. 20-40 minutes of riding and then BAM! nothing....it's ranged from loose connections to a bad CDI that's overheating.

My kids 2012 Gio Hummer is the same, long time at idle or driving really slow will kill the battery, if they drive it hard it's fine, I've never looked into what's causing it, it hasn't really been an issue as long as it doesn't idle for a long time.
