What are plow skids for?
#1
My Cycle Country plow lost one of its skids and the other got bent so I took them off. What are the skids for and what is the effect of not having them installed? Below is a picture of the type of skid it came with. I just found them on Amazon and have ordered a new pair. A friend of mine says he has never used them and the plow works better without them.

I just took mine off too (one broke off actually). I'm not plowing on gravel much anymore since I moved to town from the country and that's the only reason I saw for them, but usually ground is so uneven anyway you're still getting a little deep even with them on. I just keep my finger on the button to raise if I sense I need to.

As mentioned above you adjust them to keep the blade at just the right height to scrape whatever surface you're plowing without the blade getting too worn. Kind of an extra to the wear bar that makes contact with the surface.

I let mine run on the blade. it took mine around 5 years to wear to the point the blade needed replaced and at that point it was cheaper to buy the $15 steel piece (1"x 60") i needed from home depot and welded straight to the old blade rather than order new skidders that ended up breaking off and were a pain in the first place. They cost more too,at least the ones i found. The blade doesnt wear that fast, the skidders are only touching in about a 1.5-2 maybe 3" surface area, each ,so about 3"-6" of surface area, the blade is 50-60" long. much more surface area so it takes a while to wear down. it doesnt mark the drive way either.

We pull them off all of the plows and chuck em. All you have to do is keep a good cutting edge on the blade.
Like others have said if your cutting edge is spent the skids will keep your plow blade from getting worn.
