Default Shift Selector Box

My 2001 Polaris Sportsman owner's manual says to change the lubrication every two years for the shift selector box (H/L/R). When 200 hours and 24 months. Does anyone do this?
There is no mention of it in the maintenance section of my Clymer's manual and when I bought my oil for all the typical maintenance things like engine, tranny, and hubs the salesman at the dealership never heard of anyone performing the shift selector box service. Any advice is valued.

Don't think anyone that brought their machine in actually had this service done unless they had problem with the shift box. Yes it's a good idea to change the oil as it can break down, seals can seep dropping the fluid level, parts the can wear out quicker, shifting becomes harder. Easier just to remove it from the machine and clamp in a vice to service it. 0w40 as the manual says or even 5w40 would be okay.Just fill to where the fluid covers the shift levers.

How about using AGL I got with the Polaris service kit?

I'd stick with what the manual calls for, either 0w40,5w40 engine oil.

My shifter is sticky feeling sometimes and doesn't want to change directions or from H to L easily. I was thinking the service might do some good. But since I haven't seen a diagram of the service because it isn't in the Clymer's manual, I'm afraid of opening the shifter box and have all these tiny cogs fall on my work shop floor.

Problem may be just needing a linkage adjustment. After a while almost all do because of slack in the small ball ends on the linkage. First check that the belcranks(levers) on the transmission are tight along with the linkage ends. Place the shifter in neutral, loosen the lock nuts on the linkage ends at the shift box, remove the two 10mm nuts holding the ends to the gear box levers. Turn the linkage ends in or out to where they line up straight with the holes in the shift box levers. Then replace the two nuts and tighten the lock nuts. See if that helps.
