'01 Sportsman 400 4wd question

I've been noticing that the longer I drive the ATV and the hotter the engine/drivetrain gets the more problems I'm having getting the shifter to lock into a proper reverse (4WD). Is this something that could happen as the trans heats up?? When shifting into Reverse the "N" indicator activates instead of the "R" indicator light. If I make the shift before the ATV comes to a dead stop I can usually get it to shift properly and the "R" indicator displays.
Have changed linkage parts, installed a new shifter box over the summer and just put in a new bellcrank but still have the same shifting issue.
Does anyone know if heat will cause something in the tranny to affect 4WD operation?

I would not think the tranny effects AWD at all since its a push button signal to the locking hillary hubs and it all about electrics.
Now shifting from L,H,R,N could mean the linking rods just need a adjustment. The threaded adjusters ends are by the shifter handle behind the side panel.

I'd place the gear shift in neutral, adjust the linkage ends to where both drop in the shift box control arms with no resistance then see if works better. If still hard to get the reverse light to kick on properly could be a wiring/connector problem on the 3 position gear switch on the gear case or the plastic internal lever on the switch may be worn. Switches have been updated also. Items#10 and 11. Dirt Cheap Yamaha & Polaris OEM Parts & Accessories – Cycle Parts Warehouse
