Default When is it false advertizing with displacement?

I notice a few models sure make it sound like they are larger bore then they are. Here is a few that stand out.

Brute Force 300 (271cc) closer to a 250 then a 300
450 Grizzly (421cc) closer to a 400.
500 Foreman and Rubicon (475cc)
KQ750 (722cc) closer to a 700
700 Grizzly (686cc)
400 KQ/Eiger (376cc)

Most get it dead on or are very close.

420 Rancher (420cc)
Prairie 366 (366cc)
660 Grizzly (660cc)
Brute force 750 (749cc)
Can-Am 500 (499.6cc)
Can-Am 650 (649.6cc)
680 Rincon (675cc) Even that is a good try atleast. They could of called it a 700 Rincon.

Then there are the a$$ backwards of it but not many for sure.

Sportsman 400 (455cc)
Kodiak 400 (401cc) Not worth mentioning really.

I can see a 10cc give or take but after 20-25cc its almost a lie.

I really like the 420 Rancher, 366 Prairie and 660 Grizzly method, Just call it what it is.

Just a marketing tool for the most part that they can get away with it. Calling it a 300 machine sounds better than what the lower actual ccs of the engine is,plus if it's larger than 250ccs,no problem in calling it what they want.Same on most of them.Anything over 600-700 ccs they can list it factual if they want to because people know they're big engines to begin with. Some manufacturer could even come out with a Screaming Devil 666 that was actually 666 ccs if they wanted to. Don't know how many people would buy a machine like this, but if was called a Screaming Devil 700,then a completely different story.Rolls off the tongue a little better without the stigma attached to the engine..

Is there a rule that says the model name has to be consistent with the size of the engine? With that said, the marketers know exactly what they're doing...

The Polaris 800 was a 760 cc if my memory serves me correctly.

Yes. The Polaris 800 was one of the worst offenders. Even worse Arctic Cat makes a 1000 that's really 951cc.

They are just rounding it up or down. If you care about the CC's it is extremely easy to know, they put it right on the brochure and most advertising, they are not hiding the CC's at all.

It's all based on the Hendrix principle.

I think that's why a person with a 1000 Outlander thinks he is above a person with a 400 Outlander.
Yes the badge matters.

I'm confused. Are we on a different topic now? You went from questioning the 20-50cc discrepancy between displacement and model number to comparing a 1000cc model against a 400cc model. Also, if you're saying it's not right how 1000cc owners think they are above a 400cc owner, then why are you saying that "the badge matters". Shouldn't you be saying the exact opposite? You're not really helping yourself make your point.

Besides, quoting Dr. Seuss..."Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

I believe the market has size segments "Classes of machine". IE: 125/400/500 etc. and the manufacturer gets close, therefore fits into that 'class/category'.

I have a mower that says it is a 42" but is actually 41" (2 x 20.5" blades) I asked the dealer about this discrepancy and the above is how it was explained to me.
