Hi everybody, happy new year.

My son wants to buy a used ATV. The particular ATV he wants to buy is described as having " a few chipped teeth on gears and a small crack in trans case".

I don't know anything about ATV's or engines. Is this something I should run away from or are these problems "no big deal"?

How mechanically inclined are you? Which model and year is the machine in question? These things are generally a sign of abuse and/or being ridden hard, so I would proceed with caution.

How old is your son? What safety equipment does he have? What is you overall budget for the machine, safety gear, and repairs if needed?

 

I think you answered your own question. A great deal on a quad that needs work usually ends up costing more than paying a bit more for one that is ready to ride if you don't have the ability to fix it yourself. $70-$75/hr labor is about standard pretty much anywhere you go, that's where it ads up. A quad with obvious problems also probably has other hidden ones that the seller may honestly not even know about that will cost even more to fix. I'd pass on that one and find something in better shape.

 

Chipped teeth could be from abuse or lack of maintenance. Cracks anywhere except the body would make me want to look elsewhere. I could deal with cracked plastic.

I have noticed many times the best deals are right about tax time. Many people upgrade after getting their refund and put their current machines up for sale.
