Default Oil for sportsman

I recently got a 97 sportsman 400 and am just wanting to make sure that tc-w3 2 stroke oil will work for it

On the older ones old tcw3 is what a lot of people used in the oil tanks and many still do. You can use a synthetic oil if you wish, even so called "smokeless" oils, but they all still smoke. Maybe just a tad less with synthetic oils. Just stay with one brand as some have said that some two stroke oils may not mix well together. If in doubt, drain the oil tank, fill it back up and bleed the oil pump at the front of the atv. If the pump has been bypassed then I would use a good synthetic two stroke premix oil at 40-1 ratio. The pumps were set at the factory for a leaner 50-1 ratio.
