Too many variables.

Best one is the one sitting at your house, because that's the one you can ride any time.

Suzuki z400. Great handling, reliability, good suspension and power, aftermarket support, comfort. It is what the 400 ex should have been.

I would have to say the best one ever built is the one sitting in your garage waiting for you to take it for a spin.

Based on my own bias point of view, as well as plenty of articles and opinions, the 400EX is hard to beat for a trail quad.

I'd probably be saying something different if I ended up buying something different so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I know it's not technically a sport quad but a Renegade 500 is very light handling and has better ground clearance than a true sport quad. My son had one that I rode a few times. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the newer ones are 550 cc machines now. And, in addition to being a 4wd, you can get power steering now. Not a traditional "trail" machine but worth a look.

You can probably put the newer Polaris Scrambler 850 and 1000 in there as well. These are cvt auto 4wd machines and do cost a lot more used than something like a Raptor or 400ex, easily double or more for similar condition. I had a Wolverine 450 4x4 and it sort of fits in the same category. I think the OP is looking for pure sport though. One nobody mentioned was the Polaris Predator, a very capable machine. They made an irs version called the Outlaw that had very nice ground clearance for a sport quad.

Not all wooded trails are created equal. Steep, large rocks with shelfs come to mind versus wet, rooted woods.

I was SOOO close to buying an IRS Outlaw 500 before I got my EX.

I have to say, I'm glad I didn't.

They are too heavy, and too expensive to fix.

I know they outperform the EX, but for me, it wouldn't have been the right machine.
