All depends on how previous owner took care of the machine. If all maintenence has been done and proper lubes used then it might be good, but if not maintained then could be a problem. When trying to go cheap, then serious looking is needed!! At that age, rubber cracks and gaskets begin to leak and dry up. I would certainly look any cheap machine over very carefully!

Put your hand on the engine as soon as you get there to see if it was warmed up b4 you got there. You want to see how it starts cold. Check the oil, should be at full mark and clean (clear). Look to be sure airbox is intact and not hacked apart. Ask for maintenence records. Check all wiring you can see, make sure it is not hacked up. Tires have good tread? Dry rotted or cracked? Visible plugs, a couple are fine but if tires are full of plugs then time to replace them. Ask to look at air filters to see if they are clean. Plastic condition? Plastic can be expensive to replace and if broken badly, a sign of abuse. Look at frame carefully for rust and signs f being bent. Once it is running...did it start right up? No metalic knocks or odd sounds..smooth idle, rapid increase when throttl is stabbed, with no hesitation..
Just threw out some ideas for you to think about. If you have any friends that understand atv then take them along, an extra set of eyes and ears is good. If it sounds to good to be true, then it probably is, time to rethink!!
