I just bought a Tao Tao 125cc ATV for my little boy and it was running fine until one of his older brothers drove it. We noticed the chain slipped off so we fixed it, but then we realized it won't change gears, it will only go in reverse. It has a hand shifter that the previous owner put on, and it's now really loose and doesn't "catch" like it normally would when changing gears. I just need some advice on what it might be, so we can try to fix it ourselves. I've been told to rock it back and forth to see if it changes gears and that didn't help. Any advice is greatly a[ppreciated.

 

is the DIY shift lever clamped on the shifter shaft tight enough to actually rotate it properly ? like, actually shift the gears? maybe it just strpped out from being too loose too long
