Need more power/speed in my '05 Ranger XP
#11
I've done a little more research on the CDI change, asked the guys at Tri-City Polaris in Utah, probably the best Polaris dealership there is... they're responsible for the walker evans shocks used by polaris and many other innovations that end up on Polaris machines, they do TONS of R&D for Polaris directly including what's going to be coming out next for the Ranger series also... Anyway, the guys at Tri-City told me that they put an 800cc CDI on the Ranger and it actually hindered the low end and midrange, it only helped on the absolute top end. They said it never did increase the power in their testing drag racing next to a stock Ranger XP. In fact, they were confusing themselves as to which Ranger XP had the 800cc CDI because the stock XP always won the races. Interesting, huh?
I've read that the 800 CDI will increase the rpm limiter by 400 rpm, which would be nice, but if it's not making more power then what good is it?
Please anyone who knows or has found anything different, or found that the 800 CDI actually improves/increases power, please reply so we can get some kind of definitive answer to this...
Thanks,
Scott

Maybe elevation has somthing to do with it, I have suggested the cdi change to a few customers and they have called back and said wow what a differance I do know that the timing curve is competly different though as well.

Hello all Im a first timer here. I have just recently purchased a 05 Ranger Xp also. I have made many calls and did a little research myself but have not made the steps towrads buying any mods as of yet. I was told by Dale of Hotseat Perf that you would want to put the CDI in from the 700 EFI sportsman not the 800 CDI because it pumps to much fuel and runs too rich thus hindering the performance not to mention wasting gas. He stated the 700 sportsman cdi gives noticable power improvement throughout he whole power band. I Know if you take the cdi from the yamaha raptor and put it in the Rihno its a world of difference but I have not talked to anyone who has tried the 700 sportman cdi box yet? Has anyone heard anything similar to this? Simple clutching and the CDI should get you up over 50 mph. I hope. Here is something you xp owners might have noticed about your machines. . I have installed muds flaps on the frame in front of the rear wheels. Why? Take it in the mud or snow and look at the debris you pack in on top of your gas tank wiring and fuel filter. Its an easy install and could save you from a future headache.

Don't use the 800 ECU/CDI, use the 700 because the 800 dumps too much fuel. The answer to the power issue on the Ranger 700 XP is the turbo kit that my buddy Denny has designed and installed here at a local Polaris dealership. I rode this machine a few times and it's the way to go, for sure.

Rangerware makes the bolt in mud deflectors. Although the ones I picked up had to be returned because they were for a regular ranger, not an xp. So Im not sure if Rangerware has made the new model for our 2005 xp yet? But if not Im sure they will be soon.

Hi. I'm a new member to this site. I am a dealer in Alaska and have learned some tricks from the factory techs. Use a ECU, camshaft, and throttle body out of an 700 efi sportsman. One of the techs at polaris said the ranger will almost pick the front tires off the ground on pavement. The throttle body supplies more air, the ECU gives it more fuel, and the camshaft lets the motor flow it. I know this is exspensive but I would love to drive one set up like that. Rex

Ok, so at $229 for the throttle body plus $119 for the throttle position sensor, plus $189 for the camshaft, that's $540, right? Not bad I guess. I'd be willing to bet however that my Ranger XP with a turbocharger on it would still be quicker, even out of the hole. The turbo Ranger XP that I've got runs really good. Go to www.prcforum.com and do a search for the word TURBO and you'll find pictures and info on my turbo Ranger. So I finally got the power I want out of my Ranger which started this thread.
