Cold weather starting
#1
I asked this question in the wrong forum so I will try here. I am looking at buying a side by side for ice fishing. My question is, what kind of luck are you guys having starting your side by side type 4 wheelers in real cold weather? I am leaning toward the Ranger because of the EFI but am wondering if the others start well enough. Is there any reports that the other manufacturers will add an EFI to thir lineup? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The rhino is basicly a grizzly. And having a carb isnt a negitive. Once the warentee is off, youll be glad you have a carb and not efi. Carbs are very easy to work on and keep running, on older quads, it remains to be seen how reliable the efi systems will be...one thing for sure, they wont be cheap to repair, and they wont be desireable by most guys in the used market. If you plan on owning it forever, no biggie, but if you think you might have to resell it, ...carb will sell easier.
I dont have any problems starting quads in the winter. Keep the battery on a battery tender if posible, keep fresh gas in the tank, keep the float bowl empty when not in use, use the lighter weight oils, and it shouldnt be a problem to start.
I stop riding at about 10F, and i know mine would start at much lower temps.
None have real chokes, they just have enrichening circuits, and this can be an issue when it gets real cold. Usually, just a mitten over the intake, while cranking, provides enough of a choke to start the motor if the enrichener doesnt do it.
One benifit of the rhino over the ranger...if they do fail to start, the rhino can be started by pulling it with another vehicle, the ranger cant.

You can really tow start a Rhino? I wasn't aware you could do that with a belt drive auto, ... but then again, I haven't had the need to.
The Rhino starts real easy in cold weather, pull the choke **** out and it fires within a half turn of the crankshaft.

good tip! i would go with the ranger though if your just going to useit for ice fishing. EFI seems to be a better starting system, atleast it is that way with automobiles. Check out polarisindustries.com Check out their comparisons. They do a video on cold starting and the ranger won it, however its from polariisso u know itsin favor of them. The BN prowler did even start in-20○
