Well, the Paute has always resisted the wider machines... Really though, is there any talk about it officially? Hatfield/McCoy has already started allowing the wider machines. Although Canam has a 50 incher, they are allowing wider machines anyway now. So you are seeing more CanAm's out there now.

I think the big difference is that vegetation doesn't grow well in Utah unless there's a valley with a stream running down it. It's mostly arid while the East Coast gets a lot of rain. The wider you make the trail, the less vegetation available for animals to browse. I'm sure there are other reasons like it's tough in some areas to widen trails because the trail is already on a steep slope. It takes a lot of work to widen a trail like that.

I think a large part of the trails in H/M were roads to begin with so there wasn't as much work involved in opening them up to side by sides.

PS I'm not sure that Can-Am has a 50" wide side by side. Am I missing something? I know Arctic Cat and Polaris do.

Yeah you are right. 50 inch, 60 inch... they are all the same. to me it is simple. There is a reason I have both in my garage...

50" is a trail and these trails pass though roadless areas that were designated and passed into law by congress during the Clinton administration.

Anything wider than 50" isn't a trail. They will never be opened for anything wider.

Well that is too bad... But that is just in the Paiute. That is going to exclude a lot of cash paying enthusiasts from supporting the trail systems. Although in fairness, that ruling was put in place prior to today's wider machines. Shows the short sightedness of our law making process. Other trail system that do allow them will benefit financially as a result.

I love that trail, you don't need 4wd or even suspension, and if you get hunger a Domino's pizza delivery car meant you halfway on it.
